ISLAMABAD, Feb 17: United Nations officials met Baloch leader Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri in Karachi on Tuesday and sought his help in getting the kidnapped head of the UN refugee agency freed.

“Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri was approached because he is an influential personality. Marri assured us of every help he could give in this regard,” a UN official said.

Nawab Marri was told that the UN was concerned about Mr Solecki’s health, because he needed regular medication.

A meeting scheduled with another tribal chief could not take place because he had been hospitalised, the official said.

“We will meet all ulema and tribal leaders and seek their help to get Solecki released on humanitarian grounds.”

“We are ready to meet the abductors directly,” the official said.

“The government of Pakistan is making its own efforts and meanwhile we will continue to hold further meetings with people who can be helpful in securing John Solecki’s safe and early release.”--AFP

Saleem Shahid adds from Quetta: The UN reiterated its appeal for immediate and safe release of Mr Solecki.

While encouraging community leaders’ continued engagement, a UN statement asked the kidnappers to initiate direct contact so that dialogue could be started for his immediate and safe recovery.

The statement said the UN was aware of a message conveyed on Monday through the Quetta Press Club regarding an extension of deadline by the kidnappers for acceptance of their demands.

“We are grateful for the growing community support for John Solecki and the response that their support has generated.”
