HYDERABAD, Feb 20: Two brothers of Mehmood Mashori who was crushed to death late on Wednesday night in his frenetic attempt to escape arrest tried to commit suicide in the sessions court premises after the policemen they held responsible for Mehmood’s death were granted interim pre-arrest bail on Friday. Abdul Jabbar Mashori, Mehmood’s brother, lodged the case against SHO of Hatri police station Abdul Qadir Samoon and Head Munshi Hajjan Dal on charges of chasing his brother to death on the National Highway.

Samoon and Dal were granted pre-arrest bail by additional district judge-VI Roshan Ara Chandio for a sum of Rs200,000. She fixed date of hearing of their bail application for its confirmation or otherwise for March 7.

Mehmood’s heirs and relatives who had gathered in the court after learning that the policemen had sought pre-arrest bail raised slogans and created a law and order situation after the court passed the order, granting bail to the accused.

Abdul Jabbar tried to commit self-immolation but he was immediately saved by onlookers and relatives while his brother Wazeer Mashori smashed his head against a door, causing injuries to his forehead.

A heavy contingent of police led by supervising police officer of Cantonment moved to the court to bring the situation under control.

The villagers were highly charged against the court’s order and they were demanding cancellation of bail granted to the two policemen who they held them responsible for Mehmood’s death.

According to villagers, police resorted to firing as they chased Mehmood and others. In frantic attempt to escape arrest, Mehmood ran across the highway and came under the wheels of a speeding trailer while others escaped, they said.

The villagers placed his body on the highway and blocked traffic in protest against police late on Wednesday night. They cleared the road after DPO assured them of suspending the SHO and head munshi who were later placed under suspension.

Sources in police said that Mehmood was involved in some cases registered at Hatri and Kotri police stations.
