1 million Watan Cards issued

ISLAMABAD, Oct 27: The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has issued one million Watan Cards to the victims of recent floods that paved the way for distribution of Rs20 billion amongst the affected persons.

Nadra was given the task of preparing these cards aimed at making the distribution of financial assistance to the floods-stricken people transparent. Apart from Watan Cards, Nadra has also distributed 300,000 computerised identity cards free of cost among the flood affected people in a record time acknowledged by different donors and international agencies, said Tariq Malik, deputy chairman, Nadra. —Staff Reporter

Young man found dead

CHAKWAL, Oct 27: Body of a young man was found here on Wednesday, police said. Arshad Mehmood, 25, a resident of Darot village of tehsil Talagang was abducted and later the abductors axed him to death and threw his body in a jungle. Tamman police have registered a case and started investigation. —A Correspondent

Donation for dist health dept

CHAKWAL, Oct 27: A non-government organisation has donated a cheque of Rs606,400 to the district health department to tackle dengue.

Plan Pakistan handed over the cheque to the executive District Officer (health) Dr Nasir Mehmood on Wednesday. The health department is faced with major financial crisis. —A Correspondent

SHO among five suspended

CHAKWAL, Oct 27: Regional Police Officer Hamid Mukhtar Gondal has suspended five policemen of Kalar Kahar including the SHO for indiscipline.

The RPO during a surprise visit to the police on Tuesday night found police personnel in casual mood and some of them were not wearing proper uniform.

The police station does not have proper signboard on the road. Moreover, the crime rate was high. —A Correspondent

One shot dead

GUJAR KHAN, Oct 27: An activist of Pakistan People’s Party was shot dead in the Ratal Village of Gujar Khan Police Station on Wednesday.

According to the police, Raja Safdar was returning home after dropping his children at a school, when two persons riding a motorcycle intercepted him and after confirming his identity opened fire killing him on the spot. —Correspondent

Pickup stand a ‘security’ risk

ATTOCK, Oct 27: The district police have declared a pickup stand adjacent to Government Postgraduate Collage a security threat to the institution.

The police headquarters said the matter was discussed at a meeting chaired by DPO Dr Akhtar Abbas. The meeting, which was also attended by officials of the district administration, observed that the college was very unsafe due to the presence of the pickup stand.

The participants suggested that besides other security measures the boundary wall of the college should be raised. The meeting also discussed other security measures for sensitive installations and public points.

The DPO directed his subordinate officers to ensure implementation of security standing operating procedure (SOP) in letter and spirit to avoid any terrorism incident. —Correspondent

Stray bullet hits woman

TAXILA, Oct 27: A woman was critically injured when a stray bullet hit her in Dhoke Malkan in the jurisdiction of Hassanabdal police on Monday.

Police said Shan Bibi, 51, was working in his courtyard when the stray bullet hit her. The injured was taken to the tehsil headquarters hospital Hassanabdal from where she was referred to the district headquarters hospital (DHQ) Rawalpindi.

The police have registered a case and started investigation.—Correspondent
