LAHORE, Nov 13: Three labourers were electrocuted and another three suffered burns while erecting a tent at a wedding venue in Shadbagh’s Taj Park on Saturday.
The victims were daily-wagers who were hired by a contractor from Bhati Gate for work. Police inquiries (with the witnesses) revealed that the labourers tried to lift the main portion of the tent with the help of a long iron pipe which touched a high-transmission wire passing over a plot. The current flowed through the pipe as a result of which the six workers suffered burns.
Muhammad Mohsin, 22, who belonged to Chiniot, Muhammad Naveed, 28, of Sialkot, and an unidentified man succumbed to their burns at Mayo Hospital. Munawar (of Sanda), Hafeez (of Toba Tek Singh) and Shujaauddin (of Begum-kot, Shahdara) were admitted for treatment.
The police learnt that jeweller Abdur Rehman of Taj Park had given a contract of erecting tents to Naeem, who works for Usman Tent Service in Sanda, for the wedding ceremony of his daughter. Naeem further gave the contract to Mujahid who hired inexperienced labourers from Bhaati Chowk instead of utilising the trained staff.
The bodies were shifted to the morgue. The police recorded statements of some shopkeepers who witnessed the incident. The Shadbagh police said relatives of Mohsin and Naveed had been informed about the incident and a case registered against Mujahid who was missing.
