ISLAMABAD, Dec 13: The government on Monday revised the cotton cess from Rs20 to Rs50 per bale after a lapse of over three years.
Announcing the increase at a meeting of the Pakistan Central Cotton Committee, Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Nazar Mohammad Gondal said that the increase had been made in consultation with All-Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) to generate revenue for agricultural research. The increase in the cess would pay its dividends in the shape of better research outcome by scientists, he said.“Internationally compatible pricing for agriculture produces is an ideal mechanism to motivate farmers. Agriculture research base to be enhanced to increase the per acre yield to meet the growing demands of the country,” said the Minister.
Earlier presiding over the meeting of the Cotton Crop Assessment Committee, Mr Gondal said although Pakistan witnessed worst floods in its history, more than 11 million bales of cotton crop production is expected this year.
The meeting was also attended by representatives from all provinces, Aptma, Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), Exporters Association, Progressive Growers and senior officials of the ministry.
