NEW DELHI: Pakistan’s cricketers will continue to miss out on the Indian Premier League bonanza after none of them were included in the auction for next year’s money-spinning event, organisers said Tuesday.

No Pakistani featured in a list of 416 players whose services will be auctioned in Bangalore on January 8-9 for the fourth edition of the Twenty20 tournament, which is to be held in April and May.

Pakistani cricketers took part in the inaugural IPL in 2008, but were forced out of the 2009 edition due to security concerns in the wake of the Mumbai attacks, and were then ignored for the 2010 tournament.

An IPL official said the Pakistan Cricket Board had not forwarded any names for the January auction.

“The rules stipulate that a player must apply through his home board if he wanted to be put up for the auction. No names were received from Pakistan,” the official told AFP.

Some top stars from other countries opted out. The Australian trio of captain Ricky Ponting, his deputy Michael Clarke and fast bowler Mitchell Johnson chose to give the event a miss.

Other notable absentees include former Australian stars Matthew Hayden and Glenn McGrath. The former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who signed for 1.55 million dollars with the Chennai Super Kings in 2009, has retired.

But ex-West Indian captain Brian Lara, 41, who was not part of the first three editions, has thrown his hat in the ring despite bowing out of international cricket in April 2007.

Other first-timers include England’s Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Graeme Swann, Michael Yardy and Luke Wright.

The eight founder franchises will be joined by two new teams from Kochi and Pune for the auction.

Twelve players who were retained by their franchises will not feature in the auction.

Star batsman Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, West Indian Kieron Pollard and Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka were retained by the Mumbai Indians.

Reigning champions Chennai Super Kings kept Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and South African all-rounder Albie Morkel.

The Aussie duo of Shane Warne and Shane Watson were retained by Rajasthan Royals, while Delhi Daredevils kept Virender Sehwag and Bangalore Royal Challengers retained Virat Kohli.

The tournament, due to run from April 8 to May 22, will be the first without the IPL’s chief architect Lalit Modi, who was thrown out by the Indian board over accusations about his conduct.

The Indian board has registered a criminal case against him for the misappropriation of 4.68 billion rupees (106 million dollars) and he also faces a government probe over alleged financial irregularities.

COMMENTS

  1. I am happy that no Pak players are in IPL this time too.. Why do you guys cry for Indian money when u hate us. Its time we stop all aid and import of goods from pak.

  2. I hate to say that capitalist Indian board is discriminating against players and franchieses. As an investor I will like to have best players available for my team. I do not blame PCB for not allowing Paki players as it got humiliated last year. Unfortunately who will suffer is players and public as we know that some of best players are not available for whatever reason. As I have said before that term auction is an insulting to players as it has made them into a consumable commodity. It should be called drafting players and let the teams negotiate terms of salary according to teams needs and players capabilities.

  3. why not pakistan make there on ppl play in (U A E) is not a bad idea , just go world cup and win it all quite every body we can do it . thing hard for ppl playing in (U A E) every body loved to play there go green gooooooooooooooooooooo

  4. IPL is the measure of a cricketers popularity and demand. Its not only the richest cricket tournment but also the most prestigious.Pakistan players should be part of it. But the recent damage to our image in UK and the 26/11 issue with India has costed us millions. Not happy!

  5. jst concentrate on winning the next t20 wc
thats more importnt then the ipl…

  6. Come on, Pakistan should be happy that there players were not kept on sale like vegetables in the IPL auction. IPL is just a money making machine

  7. I for one am not sorry the Bakistani players are going to miss out again. They should not be included till the perpetrators of the events of 26/11 are brought to justice. For those who think politics and sports should NOT mix, well the Pakistanis did not play South Africa during the days of aparthied mixing sports and politics.

  8. Why should Pakistani players rue their not being chosen by the IPL teams ? Is it solely because they do not want to lose out on the good money that players make from this tournament ? can anyone blame the IPL teams from being chary about hiring Pakistani players ?

  9. what problem with indian cricket board, why not play pakistani players in third time ipl,

  10. it was a pleasure to watch Pakistani players playing in IPL last to last year.we will miss them this year

  11. Who cares… I haven't seen IPL since it's inception….

  12. Vairamuthu (Coimbato

It is PCB's fault. I expected Abdul Razzaq, Afridi, U. Akmal and few others to be in auction, but PCB denied that. Expect Mohd Irfan for the IPL-IV for KKR.

  13. players from every nationalily should be a part of IPL cricketing event, Deserving players should be taken despite any political/security concerns or costs.Franchisees, borads and countries should consider sports/arts bigger than political concerns (how serious they may be).

  14. is it not excellent news for us in Pakistan – let us start a PPL and ignore the Indians. This is a sheer insult and we should not send any name to them come what may.

Let India run a lacklustre IPL – we will ban TV coverage of that as well in Pakistan.

Are we all for Indian money, surely we are not.

    Cheers,
    Nivi

    • Why not. PPL is great idea, when you fix all the games it would be more fun. Publish all the results and schedules upfront. so people would know who will win before watching their stars. I feel sorry for Pakistanis, all you guys know is to blame it on others for your missfortune.
