
PESHAWAR: South Asia’s fastest woman Naseem Hameed bagged the 100m gold while her Pakistan Army teammate Liaquat Ali replicated her feat in the men’s race during at the track and field events of the 31st National Games at Peshawar’s Qayyum Stadium on Tuesday.
Naseem Hameed won the women’s gold medal in 12.80 seconds, while Wapda’s Sumera Tayyaba and Samreen Naz won silver and bronze respectively.
“I will also compete in the 200 metres race but my main aim was to win the 100m gold and I am very happy to have achieved that,” Hameed told reporters after her win.
Hameed, who shot to fame after her gold-medal-winning performance at the South Asian Games, dismissed reports of security concerns and mismanagement at the National Games.
“The security situation is quite satisfactory and we feel no fear while staying here in Peshawar…I am looking forward to coming back here.”
Meanwhile, Hameed’s Pakistan Army teammate Liaquat Ali won the men’s 100 metre race with a time of 10.78 seconds. Mohammad Imran of Army won the silver medal and Muhammad Safdar of Wapda won bronze.
In the men’s pole vault event, Adnan Anjum and Muhammad Jaffar of Pakistan Army bagged gold and silver while Wapda’s Muhammad Ismail won the bronze medal.
The 5000 metre men’s gold medal went to Gulshan Masih of Wapda, while Sakhawat of Pakistan Air Force won silver and Naseeb Khan of Wapda secured bronze medal.
Maryam Babar of Wapda created a new national triple jump record in her gold-medal-winning jump of 11.66 metres. Meanwhile, her Aliya Noor won silver medal and Razia Sher Khan of Higher Education Commission (HEC) grabbed bronze.
The first two medals in women’s javelin throw went to Wapda as Saira Saeed and Parveen Akhtar won gold and silver respectively, while the HEC’s Madiha Latif won bronze in the same event.
Rabia Ashiq and Gul Naz Ara of Wapda won gold and silver medals respectively in women’s 800 meter race, followed by Najma Parveen of Punjab for bronze. While Ali Muhammad and Farhan Ahmed of Wapda won gold and silver medal respectively and Muhammad Asim of HEC won bronze in the men’s event.
