ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Thursday adopted the 19th Amendment, DawnNews reported.

Earlier, Chairman Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms Raza Rabbani tabled the bill as passed by the National Assembly for consideration in Senate.

While tabling the bill in the House, Rabbani said today was a historic day in the political history of Pakistan and the parliament that another unanimous amendment bill was being presented in the House.

“This is a unique moment in the political history of the country that two very important constitutional bills have been presented unanimously in the House in 2010,” he added.

He informed the House that some articles of the 18th Amendment were challenged in the Supreme Court and there were rumours that the state’s institutions were heading towards a collision.

However, he said, showing sagacity, the Supreme Court sent back the bill to the parliament for review.

He said the 19th Amendment Bill gave effect to certain amendments in the Constitution after considering the observations of the Supreme Court.

Rabbani said the top political leadership has dispelled fears of confrontation among state institutions as the lower house of parliament was prepared to amend the Constitution for a second time in a year and this time in compliance with a Supreme Court order.
