WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama chose former commerce secretary William Daley as his new chief of staff on Thursday, bringing a renowned powerbroker with close ties to big business into his retooled administration.

Daley will be the long-term successor to former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who left the administration last year in a bid to win election as mayor of Chicago, after Daley's brother Richard decided not to stand again.

Washington insider Pete Rouse, who served in the job on an interim basis after Emanuel's departure, will be elevated to the role of counsellor to the president, two officials said on condition of anonymity.—AFP
