ISLAMABAD: Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday retired on Thursday after completing one-year tenure as an ad-hoc judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Ramday heard a number of important cases on Thursday as it was his last working day according to the appointment notification issued on February 18, 2010.

He served as judge of the Supreme Court for over seven years. He was appointed SC judge in January 2002, retired on January 12 last year and reappointed ad-hoc judge on February 18.

Justice Ramday was born on January 13, 1945 in Lahore and received his early education from Central Model School, Lahore. He joined Government College, Lahore from where he migrated to Gordon College, Rawalpindi, on account of his father's posting in the Federal Ministry of Law and graduated from there.

He remained editor of the college Magazine “Gordonian” besides the president of Minerva Club. He was the best debater of the college.

He did L.L.B. from the University of Punjab in 1968 and remained the Secretary of the Punjab University Law Society. He also remained the Editor of College Magazine “Al-Mizan” and won a large number of prizes and trophies in international and all Pakistan inter-collegiate debates. He was declared the best English debater in 1968 and won the “Krishnan Kishore Grover Goodwill Gold Medal Declamation Contest”.

He was enrolled as an advocate of the subordinate courts in 1969, as an advocate of the High Court in 1971 and as an advocate of the Supreme Court in 1976.

He was appointed as an Assistant Advocate General for Punjab in April, 1976 and promoted as Additional Advocate General in 1984 and as the Advocate General in March, 1987.

He was elevated to the Lahore High Court in October, 1988 and to the Supreme Court of Pakistan in January, 2002.

It may be mentioned here that a Full Court Reference scheduled to be held on Thursday in honour of the outgoing Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman was cancelled as his name was proposed by the Chief Justice for reappointment as ad-hoc judge of the apex court for further one year. – APP
