DAR ES SALAAM: Police in Tanzania have seized 179 kg (395 lb) of heroin and arrested two Pakistani suspects, a senior anti-drugs official said on Tuesday.

The heroin, worth at least 4 billion shillings ($2.65 million), was seized on Monday at a house in Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

“This is the single biggest heroin bust in the country's history,” the head of Tanzania's anti-narcotics police unit, Godfrey Nzowa, told Reuters.

“We have arrested four suspects, among them two Pakistan nationals and two Tanzanians.”

Like other east African nations, Tanzania is a major transit hub for trafficking in hard drugs from Asia and Latin America to Western markets thanks to lax customs controls and corruption.
