KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad has turned down an offer to become the national cricket team’s batting coach, reports said Tuesday.

Miandad was approached by Pakistan’s limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi and Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ijaz Butt to take up the job of coaching the batsmen, after the team returned from the World Cup. The batting great, however, turned down the offer citing personal reasons.

“The Pakistan team surely needs a batting coach and the board approached Miandad, but he unfortunately declined the offer because of personal reasons,” team manager Intikhab Alam was quoted as saying by cricket website Cricinfo.

It is understood, however, that Miandad will help the batsmen during the team’s practice sessions in Pakistan, as he did prior to the tour of New Zealand late last year.

After returning from the World Cup, Afridi was vocal about the need for a batting coach, as none of Pakistan’s batsmen managed to score a century during the tournament.

Miandad has previously had three coaching stints with the national team, with the last term ending in 2004.

Pakistan leave for the tour of West Indies on Thursday, April 14, for a one off Twenty20 international, five one-day internationals and two Test matches.

COMMENTS

  1. yes. mr. ijaz butt should removed from the pcb. under his leadership pakistani cricket has to face a very bad situation. and most of the talented players are deprived off playing in the national team only because of the selectors and specially for Ajaz butt. as sarwat said, i also appreciate it,,,, mr. butt please leave the pakistani cricket team alone in the name of Allah…… thnk you..!!!!!

  2. Javed miandad has tried everytime to give talent a chance but PCB hidden bosses have always kept own strings attached.

  3. Miandad is a legend no question about it… In my humble opinion if Miandad is sincere then he should have accepted the offer and just concentrate on improving batting of Pakistani players and should have worked under whoever he had to work under but I can understand being Pakistanis we want Name, Fame and most importantly POWER. We do not want to do anything without these three things….

  4. This is to suggest PCB bosses that they should request Jawaid Miadad to accept position of HEAD COACH and immediately remove Waqar Yunus from coaching position as Aqib Jawaid is more suitable than him to look after coaching of bowling.

Waqar wrote 2nd of Sydney test that our bowling was treat to watch but Mike Hussey destroyed his coaching skills all around the ground in the same test match with help of Kamran Akmal who dropped several catches on bowling of ace bowler Mohammad Sami in fact carrier of Mohammad Sami has fadded because of in-numberable drop catches on his bowling by Kamran Akmal still this talented pacer deserve the spot in Pakistan team to serve national duties in better way. All the best to Pakistan team in coming tour.

  5. Why are you critiszing Javaid miandad, the pcb has become mess under its current chairman aijaz butt why is he not removed, under his leadership Pakistani cricket is in declining phase. Players like abdur razzak talent is wasted for no reasons, earlier he was dropped from t20 cricket that and was said that this format doesn't suit his style of playing, no one there is no better player than him, know he is dropped again for not performing in world cup is any body to question the management of Pakistan team when he was given chance, even when he told team management he wants to play major role. I don't know what they have learned under this coach and selectors the fielding is worst than before. Miandad should accept offer when the PCB is corruption free.

  6. PCB Can Appoint …Inzamam

  7. I think Saeed Anwar is the best person to coach the pak team.He had a great technique and can help the always struggling pakistani openers.

  8. We will send you a batting coach in exchange of a bowling one! :)

  9. It would be great, if Miandad is batting coach and PCB Head. He is not accepting offer because of past misbehave experience of PCB officials. They should give high respect to our legend as Miandad.

  10. No foreign coach is willing to coach Pakistan after the murder of Bob Woolmer & because of the security situation. Sadly like much of the deterioration of the country, the cricket team is also falling apart. I think Inzamam should become the batting coach.

    • Bob Wolmer's death was tragic but it was not murder – I can understand foreigners being apprehensive about coaching in a country where people don't seem to regard facts as important. Anyway Pakistan's first coach following Bob Wolmer was an Australian.
Who says Inzimam is a capable coach? He must prove himself at a lower level. Great players don't always make great coaches.

  11. Pakistan has produced many great batsmen with sound technique and temprament, why miandad only? Salim Malik is one of those I think was great and could be usefull for pakistan cricket. ……….many players right now either coach or advisors of pakistan cricket, were involved in match fixing, if they can be re-installed, WHY NOT Malik? " He who cast the first stone, Who had no sin" (Christ).

  12. Its never a "personal" reason

  13. There is no doubt in the greatness of Miandad as one of the top run scorer in the history of Pakistan. However, it would be fair to say his batting techniques had fundamental flaws that should not be carried forward.

However, what he can really coach the current and future lot of batsmen is patience, focus, and selflessness; all hallmarks of a classic batsman and certainly of his great career.

  14. What happened to I will do anything for my country and whenever my country needs me? I guess it is a fashion in Pakistan society to wear your religion and nationalism up your sleeves. What a joker he is.

  15. I think he made the right decision for the first time in his life. He had been given chances to coach the team and he did fairly well. In all the three stints he was never given full support from the board and he ended up at the wrong end. Majority of our players have problem with authoriity and they would rather be free and do whatever suites them. Javed is not the right person, as you know, he will speak his mind and try to run the show which he duely desrves.
Let them have a coach with lesser profile, the best thing that Miandad and the likes can do, is train our younger generation and make them ready for future.
There are too may captains, coaches and experts within this setup already spoiling the broth.
    Good Luck!

  16. its sad that miandad refused to coach.if he dont want to coach the senior side then he should coach youngsters.if he agree then am sure pakistan will get more and more batsmen in future.because there is need that some one like miandads caliber train juniors.

  17. He won't come till waqar is there.

    • I think he has done the right thing by not accepting the offer. He has been humiliated quite many times by the PCB. Also, his last few years before retirement were politicized by PCB and Imran Khan.

  18. It is unfortunate for Pakistan as Javed Miandad, like most in our beloved country, are interested in Job Title more than the actual function. Personal reasons. Yeah. Right!

  19. Pakistan team really needs a batting coach. If not Javed Miandad then somebody else can do this job. Poor batting and fielding puts too much pressure on our bowlers.

  20. For the sake of his country Javed Miandad should accept the offer. Team Pakistan badly needs a good coach, not only for batting but also for fielding. We all know that it was because of poor fielding and dropping of some vital catches that Pakistan couldn't come in final – and possibly win it.

    • Do you really think we had the capability of winning the world cup. We were good but not excellent and that is why we lost the plot in semis, to be honest we were never prepared for that all important clash. I think blaming people is easy, but getting things right at this point of time is very important and crucial for the future of Paki cricket.

    • Miandad must be the Chairman of PCB.
Ajaz Butt please leave the Pakistan cricket alone.

      • Javed Miandad was a great batsman of his time. But he is never a good leader. Whenever he became captain or manager (4 times in the past) he was removed unceremoniously, enough to show there is something wrong with his personality.

Waqar Younis has lifted the team from ruins, and need longer period to take Pakistan cricket where it belongs to. Miandad is enjoying very lucrative job in PCB.
