Suspect killed in `encounter`

KARACHI, April 14: An armed suspect was killed in an exchange of fire with police in Federal B Area on Thursday, officials said.They said that the police mobile was on patrol and checking vehicles randomly near the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth.

“The policemen saw three suspicious-looking youngsters in an auto rickshaw,” said an official at the Samanabad police station.

“When one of the policemen signalled them to stop, the rickshaw driver sped away hitting the policeman who fell on the ground. The police mobile then chased the rickshaw and finally spotted it in Ancholi Society.”

He said that when the men inside the rickshaw saw the police they opened fire on them that left the windscreen of the police mobile damaged.“The situation led to an exchange of fire and after a brief encounter one of the suspects was gunned down by the police. However, his accomplices managed to escape from the scene,” he said.

A TT pistol was found in his possession, the police official added. “The deceased has not yet been identified.”

Rangers man killed

In another “encounter”, a Pakistan Rangers lance naik was killed in an alleged exchange of fire with armed suspects in a North Nazimabad area on Thursday.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Rangers said that a police party was chasing suspected bandits travelling in a car and the police were joined by the Rangers personnel deputed at the Board Office roundabout near Paposh.

“The armed men fired at the law-enforcers and one of the bullets hit Lance Naik Mohammad Nawaz. He died on the spot while one of the suspects was arrested and handed over to the area police,” he added.
