SIALKOT, April 24: Women home-based workers (HBWs) are facing unfriendly working condition including dangerous labour, low wages, gender discrimination, lack of social security cover and restrictions on forming associations.

Hina Naureen, the president of Baidari, an NGO, said this while talking to reporters here on Saturday.

She said status and living conditions of HBWs needed to be assessed and improved so that they could lead contended life.

The Baidarie, with the support of International Labour Organisation and the United Nations, is in the process of implementing a pilot project for socio-economic empowerment of HBWs in Sialkot district. To make the project comprehensive and to develop recommendations for framing policies regarding HBWs, Baidarie is holding a consultative workshop at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) here on Monday (tomorrow).

Saeed Ahmad Awan, who is director at the Centre for Improvement of Working Conditions and Environment in Punjab, Hasnat Javaid Syed, labour welfare joint director, and Abdul Latif Chaudhry, EOBI regional head, will attend the workshop beside representatives of the SCCI, sports goods manufacturers, government departments, civil society organisations and HBWs.
