LAHORE, May 4: Though Pakistan Cricket Board’s Governing Board members called chief selector Mohsin Khan to Lahore while preventing him from holding a press conference in Karachi over some key controversial issues, it will not be easy for the GB members to find an amicable solution.

Well-informed sources told Dawn that some GB members called Mohsin to Lahore on Thursday after advising him to cancel his scheduled press conference in Karachi on Wednesday which he wanted to address to express his grievances over some selection matters and he was even ready to resign in protest.

“If the GB members manage to resolve the issue amicably, then they may take Mohsin to PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to have a meeting, otherwise both Mohsin and the PCB chairman are looking at point of no return,” the sources said.

The bone of contention was some changes which were made in the Pakistan team that Mohsin had finalised for the Test series against the West Indies and referred that to Ijaz Butt for approval on Monday.

While Adnan Akmal and Khurram Manzoor’s names were in the team of the chief selector, Umar Akmal’s name was not there. But when the team was released to the media, the names of Adnan and Khurram were omitted while that of Umar was included.

The sources close to the PCB chairman said Ijaz Butt was annoyed with Mohsin over taking a decision of calling a press conference instead of sitting with him to solve the issue.

“Ijaz believes the matter can be solved amicably and this is not the right way to pressurise him,” the sources said.

“The PCB chairman was also ready to discuss the complaints of Mohsin about the alleged wrong strategy of coach Waqar Younis over picking the playing XI,” the sources said.

“Ijaz was of the view that this matter could only be solved in the presence of the touring selection committee.”

The sources said the GB members, who are enjoying good status in the PCB, were not happy over the situation as they stepped in to hush up the ugly saga.

The sources said Mohsin was not happy with Waqar’s role as he had the perception that the coach was deliberately spoiling the new talent by not giving them proper chances and for which the only reason was they had been selected by him (Mohsin).

Recently, upcoming paceman Sadaf Hussain and batsman Usman Salahuddin were not given proper chances in the five-match ODI series.

To some extent, the PCB chairman agreed with Mohsin on this issue, the sources revealed.

Mohsin had the stance that the selectors picked every player with a specific strategy. But if he did not get proper chance on the same position the entire exercise of introducing youngsters will be wasted.
