KARACHI: Tension and fear returned to parts of the city on Saturday night after two suspects were killed in an alleged shootout with the Rangers in Lyari, following a search operation by the paramilitary personnel, officials said.
They said the killings that followed two kidnapping incidents in the area earlier in the day had led to the Rangers' operation.Though the Sindh Rangers officials described the operation as just “an action against criminals” without providing details, the area police said the shootout took place near Hasht Chowk when personnel of the paramilitary force came under an armed attack.
“An inspector and a solider of the Rangers sustained bullet wounds,” said a police official. “That led to an exchange of fire that killed two suspects, Ismail alias Baba and Javaid. Another man sustained bullet wounds and was shifted to the hospital for treatment.”
Lyari Town SP confirmed the encounter between the Rangers and some “Lyari gangsters” but could not come up with details of the clash.
“We have reports that two people were killed in the clash and a few others were injured. More police personnel have been called in for backup support of the Rangers but currently most of the area under the criminals' control is inaccessible due to intense firing,” he added.
