ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar announced on Saturday that electricity tariff would be enhanced by two per cent in June and said loadshedding would continue for several more years.

The two per cent increase in tariff would allow the authorities to recover the cost of generating electricity, he said at a press conference. The elimination of subsidy on electricity could pave the way for release of a fresh tranche by International Monetary Fund under its standby arrangement with Pakistan.

Mr Qamar said the shortfall of electricity in the country would be brought down from about 4,000MW to 2,500MW during summer, when the demand touched its peak.
