ISLAMABAD: The Central Development Working Party considered on Tuesday 38 projects costing Rs180.5 billion, including foreign aid of Rs75 billion.

A meeting of the CDWP presided over by Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Dr Nadeem-ul-Haq and attended by sponsoring agencies and representatives of provincial governments and special areas approved or recommended 22 projects of Rs119 billion in the infrastructure sector, 13 of Rs59 billion in the social sector and three of Rs2.3 billion in the industrial and commercial sector.

The meeting was held especially to consider projects being funded with foreign assistance and related to flood. Of the 38 projects, 12 will be funded by international donor agencies.

The CDWP recommended 13 projects (Rs170 billion) to the Executive Committee of National Economic Council for consideration/approval.

Seven of the 38 projects have been revised and their net addition to the original cost of Rs13 billion is Rs18.7 billion. Twelve projects (Rs8.325 billion) were budgeted in the Public Sector Development Programme of 2010-11.

Five projects of Rs33 billion are in the energy infrastructure sector, including dispersal of power from 747 MW power plant at Guddu (Rs8 billion), renewable energy development sector investment programmes of Rs12 billion and Rs13 billion sponsored, respectively, by the Punjab government and the ministry of water and power.

Six projects of Rs77 billion are in the transport and communication sector, including rehabilitation of KKH at Barrier Lake, Attabad, Hunza and Gilgit-Baltistan (Rs24 billion), National Highway Improvement Programme (N-5 revised – Rs29.5 billion) and earthquake-damaged road projects (Rs15 billion).

In the water sector, the main projects include construction of Shadi Kaur Dam, appurtenant works and related water conveyance irrigation system (Rs4.2 billion), and restoration of flood damage work 2010 in irrigation zone, D.G. Khan (Rs464 million).

Main social sector projects include population programmes of federal, provincial and AJK costing Rs48.7 billion.

Projects in the education sector include reconstruction and rehabilitation of 326 flood damaged school/college buildings in 10 districts of Azad Kashmir at a cost of Rs4 billion.

In health sector, an amount of Rs1.9 billion was approved for phase-II of the Bannu Medical College.

In the industrial sector, projects to be funded through multi-donor trust funds in the shape of grant include economic revitalisation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata at a cost of Rs1.8 billion.

The CDWP also considered/approved concept clearance of a project “installation of 50 MW solar pilot project in Sindh and Punjab at a cost of Rs300 million, including foreign aid of Rs210 million”.
