BERLIN: Charlie Chaplin’s Hitler parody “The Great Dictator” will be screened late Friday at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on the 80th anniversary of the star’s visit to the German capital, city authorities said.

The film, which makes fun of the Nazi leader, was originally released in 1940. It was written, produced and directed by Chaplin who also played the lead role, a Hitler-lookalike dictator.

His daughter Geraldine Chaplin will be guest of honour at the open-air screening at the monument, which saw numerous Nazi marches, in the centre of the capital.

The screening marks the start of a 24-day festival during which all of Chaplin’s 80 films will be shown at a Berlin cinema, according to the city’s official website.
