KARACHI: Chief selector Hanif Khan said on Monday that if Pakistan improved their defence and the forwards displayed good finishing skills, they had good chances of winning the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy being held in China from Sept 3.

“We must improve in marking and clearing in defence while the forwards should top finishing inside the circle for better results,” Khan said in an interview here on the eve of team’s departure for the multi-nation competition to be staged in the city of Ordos.

Olympian Khan expressed his optimism that a new-look Pakistan team — a blend of youth and experience — will put up an impressive show in the continental competition.

“This is a tough event but Pakistan have the capacity to win the title if our players play to their potential.”

However, he admitted that Pakistan team was weak in some areas and termed the tournament as the acid test for the junior players.

“The performance of the youngsters in the event will give us an idea about the future of Pakistan hockey,” he said while keeping in mind next year’s London Olympics.

The chief selector made it clear that the future of the senior players depended on the performance of their younger colleagues.

“As selectors, we are looking forward to a consistent performance from the team, capable of producing better results,” he pointed out.—APP
