A DISGTRUNLED student recently shot the vice-principal at point blank range, killing him on the spot.

It shows how low the moral fibre in our society is. No doubt, students are induced to use guns by 24-hour coverage of firing, targeted killings, looting and burning incidents throughout the country.

According to reports, the mental health of the student, who had been in the university since 2002, was questionable. Once expelled from the university, he was readmitted on parents’ request. Under a wave of depression or whatsoever he shot at the faculty that took the life of the vice-principal.

Another serious flaw that took the life of the vice-principal was how the student managed to take ammunition inside the university campus.

These days multiple-tier security checks are exercised at educational institutions; failure to detect arms by security personnel is not understood.

There is a dire need for keeping a track record of students’ social activities and mental health to avoid such gory incidents.
