Pakistan-China ties

Published September 29, 2011

PAKISTAN and China are neighbouring countries and have had a very cordial relationship since long. Pakistan was the first country which accepted its independence. Since then, they have maintained close ties and have extended support to each others in various fields of economics and development. At present, Pakistan, on the one hand, is facing serious economic problems, and, on the other, terrorism that has brought its development almost to a standstill, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Terrorism-related issues were generated after 9/11 and have taken a serious turn now. Being an ally in the US-led war on terror, Pakistan has suffered a lot and continues to face several challenges on different fronts. Besides, a situation in which thousands of civilians have been killed and properties destroyed, thousands of security personnel and officers in the war on terror have also been lost and the US should recognise the huge sacrifices. Pakistan has not withdrawn from the war on terror and is ready to face all challenges for the complete elimination of terrorists but it also needs support.

In order to hide its failure in the war on terror, particularly in Afghanistan, the US has started blaming Pakistan for its alleged support to militants’ groups against Nato forces in Afghanistan. The US is increasing its influence in the region to block the military, economic and trade influence of China and that is why the US is increasing pressure on Pakistan. At the same time, the US is also signing different agreements with India, which is Pakistan’s rival. Pakistan and China have also signed bilateral agreements with regard to their mutual interest. China has always extended support to its neighbouring country, Pakistan, in its hour need…. In the prevailing situation, China’s support for Pakistan has significant importance because the US is likely to create serious problems for Pakistan. America is trying to achieve its targets through Pakistan. Now it is up to our government to take drastic steps with regard to the Pakistan-US relationship and ensure that China will support Pakistan in future, especially if there is any US aggression. If China assures its unflinching support … it will not only boost our economy but also put a brake on US pressure…. — (Sept 28)
