LAHORE, Oct 6: The Lahore High Court on Thursday sought a report from the inspector general of Punjab police on a writ petition challenging arrest of hundreds of people for protesting against electricity loadshedding. Advocate Mumtaz Sharif, representing the petitioner, stated the massive power outages had doubled people’s problems in the province. He said it was fundamental right of every citizen to lodge a protest, but the police not only tortured them but also arrested them.
He prayed that all the arrested protesters be released and cases against them be cancelled.
The court heard initial contention and issued a notice to the IG.— Staff Reporter
