Younis and Misbah the fittest: Mohsin Khan

Two of Pakistan’s most senior players are also its fittest, according to chief selector and now interim coach Mohsin Khan.

Khan says Misbah-ul-Haq (37) and Younis Khan (34) have set the benchmark for others in the team and their motivation should serve as an inspiration to the younger players.

“I don't think age is now a major issue as long as the player is very fit and hungry for cricket. Because it is difficult to hide a player who is not 100 per cent fit in international cricket and in every format of the game,” Mohsin said.

“Even at their age they (Misbah and Younis) are more fit than some of the younger players which is a tribute to them.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in customary fashion surprised many by recently naming Khan, the chief selector of the national team, as the coach of the national team.

Mohammad Illyas, a member of the selection committee, was made the acting chief selector for Pakistan’s series against Sri Lanka in UAE.

Thrust into this new role, Khan said he was looking forward to the coaching assignment as a big challenge.

“It will be a good experience watching these players up close and obviously our target is to try to win the series against Sri Lanka but for that we have to be very fit and more hungry for success,” he added.

If true, this is indeed a great news for the 'green shirts' but the real 'proof of the pudding' as they say in America will lie 'in the fig of the pudding' - the on-the-field performance in hot, humid and at times scorching ambient weather conditions in UAE, one of the toughest in the world. On behalf of the global fans of the Pakistani cricket team, I wish them good luck in their up-coming series against the in-form Sri Lankan cricket team as well as the English squad, rated currently as one of the best in the world. Keep it up and hang on tough is my message to them at this crucial juncture in time and history. Pakistan, Paeenda Baad.

Younis and Misbah are not only amongst the fittest of the Pakistani cricketers, but are great role models for the younger cricketers in the team and for cricket fans around the world. They are both liked and respected by their opponents, and Younis is always so gracious in post-match comments. The best way to compete with a strong Sri Lankan squad is to have sporting wickets that would suit Pakistan's pace attack. The fast bowlers should come super fit and the fielding should be electric. Flat tracks will simply play into the strength of the Sri Lankans - Sangakara and Jayawardene would break all records on such dead pitches.
