KARACHI: Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Khuhro accepted on Monday the resignation of estranged PPP leader and former home minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza from the membership of the provincial assembly.

Mr Khuhro said at a press conference: “I have received Dr Mirza’s resignation which was submitted to my office in his own handwriting.”

Dr Mirza had announced on August 28 that he had resigned from the Sindh cabinet and the provincial assembly and had quit his post of Sindh PPP’s senior vice-president.

But on Sunday the speaker told reporters that he had not received the resignation of the MPA from Badin.

Announcing the acceptance of the resignation on Monday, Mr Khuhro said that although he recognised the handwriting of Dr Mirza, he contacted him on telephone for confirmation that he had tendered his resignation.

He said Dr Mirza did not mention any reason for quitting the assembly seat. He said it would be for the Election Commission to announce a date for by-election for the vacant PS-57 (Badin) seat.

Speaker Khuhro said he had informed Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah about the matter.

The acceptance of Dr Mirza’s resignation from the assembly and his declaration on Sunday that he was reactivating the Lyari-based People’s Amn Committee marks the beginning of a new political role for the firebrand politician.
