ISLAMABAD: Pugilists from different countries will start arriving in Pakistan next month to attend a three-week long joint training camp being organized by the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) at Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad.

“The training is being conducted as part of the preparations for the upcoming South Asian Games (SAG) to be held in New Delhi, India next year,” PBF Secretary Akram Khan told APP on Monday.

He said that during the training camp, the PBF would bear all the expenses of foreign boxers, including boarding and lodging. He said invitations had also been sent to other nations to send their teams to compete in the third Benazir Bhutto International Boxing Championship to be staged in Islamabad from December 20 to 30.

Akram said that several countries including Poland, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal and India had expressed their willingness to participate both in the joint training camp and the championship.

According to him the tournament will be helpful for the Olympic Qualifiers for the Asian region and for the New Delhi SAG.

Meanwhile, Nepal Boxing Association General Secretary Rajiv Shrestha confirmed that an eight-member Nepalese team would tour Pakistan from November to participate in the joint camp and international boxing championship.

“We have provided an opportunity to our boxers to contest in international tournaments almost every month. National Sports Council has also started preparations for the SAG much before the event. The training camp in Pakistan will boost the players’ confidence,” he said in a statement.
