KARACHI, Nov 10: The administrator of the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) said on Thursday that arms licence records in the city was being computerised in order to keep an eye on terrorist elements and to stop wrong use of weapons.
KMC administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said this while inaugurating the computerised arms licence management system in the Civic Centre on Thursday.
Under this system all records pertaining to arms licence issued from 1944 till to date will be digitised and linked to the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra).
In the first phase, all records from 2001 to 2012 will be digitised while the data from 1944 to 2001 will be digitised in the second phase.
On the occasion, the KMC administrator said that a team of experts in the information technology had been assigned this task while the team had already computerised the record of 1,000 licences issued from 2001 to 2012.
The digitised arms licence data would soon be linked with the Nadra database, he said, adding that the new system would enable citizens to confirm online registration of their arms licence and also to get required information about their licence.
The digitised data that would be linked to the Nadra database would enable police and other law-enforcement agencies to get access to it whenever required, he added.
Giving a briefing to the administrator, district officer arms Afaq Mirza said that they were trying to make all the data available since 1944 computerised.
He said that this would be carried out in two phases.
All information about arm licence holders would be available on computer screen just after inserting computerised national identity card number or arms licence number, he said.
The system was being upgraded, but no additional expenditures were incurred on its development, he added.—PPI
