JAKARTA: Cars and a public bus plunged into a river when a concrete bridge collapsed in Indonesia's Borneo Island on Saturday, killing at least three people and injuring another 17, a local official said.

The accident took place at 4:30 pm local time in Kutai Kartanegara district in East Kalimantan province on Borneo island, search and rescue agency head Harmoni Adi in East Kalimantan province said.

“Three people were killed. The death toll is likely to increase,” he told AFP, adding that 17 people were injured, including broken bones, and receiving treatment in a nearby hospital.

He said that the search and rescue members were scouring the Mahakam River in Tenggarong town in Kutai Kartanegara district looking for bodies or survivors who were trapped in their cars in the water.

Provincial Governor Awang Faroek on local radio ElShinta said that at least three cars and one public bus fell into the river when the bridge built in 2002 collapsed.
