The year 2011 can be labeled as the year of revolutions — from Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street people have effectively enforced their right to freedom of expression.
Around the time these protests broke out, Haroon relaunched the Big Corporation Man (BCM) video which is a satire on large companies driven and motivated by sheer greed and profit.
The singer has been known to bring to attention socio-political issues with Mr Faradiye from the Awaz album Shola, Paisa from his debut solo Haroon Ki Awaz and the recent Go Saab Ji Go which is a take on local politics. In the BCM video we are shown a board meeting in progress where the CEO urges the directors to earn him maximum profits sans any consideration to environmental degradation, work place sanity, employee satisfaction, rising inflation or corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Haroon sings “I’m a big corporation man with big corporation plans; Living for profit and I don’t give a damn; We’re global juggernauts, we’re coming to your town; Got a billion-dollar budget and we’ll run you to the ground; We’ll tell you what to eat, we’ll tell you what to buy; We’ll tell you what to smoke, and how to get high” Talking to Images on Sunday, Haroon said, “I originally composed this song in 2005. I had just been on a tour of the US and I was flying back to Pakistan so I had a good many hours to kill on the flight. I had been mulling over ideas such as the consumerism of the West, the unethical behavior of greedy corporations, etc.
“The song is not about any one corporation or individual. BCM is about a frame of mind and my aim is to make people stop and think. I believe satire is one of the best ways to spread a message. I am also aware that BCM is in English so not everyone in Pakistan will get the message but quite a few English songs have been released in Pakistan of late. The lyrics are pretty clear on the fact that the system doesn’t work and we need to change it.”
Haroon especially comes down hard here on corporations producing weapons and the ones involved in environmental degradation. The second part of the BCM video focuses on the doomsday scenario and one sees recession, economic meltdown and massive street protests against illegal profiteering, etc.
