Since the last 30 years, the Shia community in New York has been holding a procession to commemorate the holy month of Muharram. The procession starts from Park Avenue and comes to an end in front of the Pakistani Consulate with over 500 participants and more than 50 volunteers.
This year, the Jafria Association of North America, the Al-Khoei Foundation, and the Mutahidda Quami Movement (MQM) New York chapter were involved in the procession. Spectators were handed out leaflets from volunteers explaining the procession and the significance of the month of Muharram.
A curious on-looker and photographer John Gendall said while watching the procession, “This is really interesting but I am not surprised by it…this is New York.”
According to a Pew Research, there are over two million Muslims in the United States and 16 per cent of them belong to the Shia sect. Muharram is a month of remembrance, as it was on the tenth day of this month — known as Ashura — that Hazrat Imam Hussain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was martyred at Karbala, Iraq. Muharram is also the first month of the Islamic calendar and is considered the holiest month after Ramazan. – Photos and text by Sadef A. Kully/Dawn.com/NY

I would like to thank Dawn news and writer Sadef Kully for this report. I participated in the Procession, and also gave out pamphlets to onlookers. Some people were surprised to see the procession, however many were interested to see it taking place.
To be fair. Organization of these juloos in Pakistan also is disciplined in general. They are being taken out for ever. It is the incitement and attacks that causes the security issues.
Im a part of this juloos, and the MQM has nothing to do with it. I dont understand where the reporter would get such news.
Because all civilized people of Pakistan migrated to USA. lol
i went to Muharram Jaloos in London, Hyde park corner. It was fantastic people from All over the world gathered In cosmopolitan to commemorate Imam Hussain (A.S)
If only Muslim countries would show the same tolerance towards other faiths and beliefs. Everything starts with education.
I salute u the muslim brotherhood of NY on memorizing the Imam-e- Mazloom and paying the gratitute to the Holy Family of Prophet PBUH ……a well organized Ashura Day.
Because We are the intolerant nation in the world. Our society doesn't allow freedom of religions or speech. Its pathetic that we preach Islam in the most unislamic way. where acceptance and tolerance was the very part of the core of islam in its inception.
Labbayk Ya Hussain (as)
it is so good to see religious tolerance all over the world and hope some third world countries can also ingrain it in their societies
There were more than 5000 participants and not 500.
Its so civilised here, why cannot it be in Pakistan.
Because this is New York, US and that is ISLAMIC Republic of Pakistan-/
I participated on sydney ashura procession which started from hyde park and finsih at sydney opera house. it's really a good procession with noha khwani in urdu and lastly the speech of sheikh is absolutely good.
Mary,
Your bigotry shows through when you capitalize Islamic. If you are implying that EVERYONE in a non-secular istate s intolerant, then it's a vast generalization.
