KARACHI: Asma Jahangir, legal counsel to the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, met her client in Islamabad under strict security measures.
She addressed the media on Thursday and said, “Thorough investigation is required, in order to prove that the memo was drafted by my client. Memogate scandal is an act of conspiracy which is the primary reason why it has blown out of proportion and remains an issue of political importance.”
According to the media sources, Jahangir said “My client decided to hand in his resignation way before he was asked to do so as he believed that if the constitutional agencies considered him dubious, he would not be able to fulfill his responsibilities effectively.”
“I have come here to prove his innocence. There is nothing against my client,” She said.
If Nawaz Sharif had any complaints against her client, he should have registered a case first and then approached a civil court.
Jahangir said there were no allegations against her client and even Nawaz Sharif did not mention any in his petition.
She was asked regarding the predicaments she was having with respect to meeting her client and she responded saying, “He was residing in the PM secretariat and it is out of my reach and boundaries. It was not in my capacity to seek permissions from various lobbies in order to meet him.”
She also said, “That my client remains innocent until he is proven guilty. Both of us have 100 per cent confidence in the judicial system and would succumb to its decision; however we do have the right to contest and fight for our innocence.”
Whilst addressing the media regarding the outcome of the meeting she said, “We are in the process of discussing and drafting an affidavit. I am not in the position to discuss various articles stated in it at this point in time.”
