RAWALPINDI: President Ayub Khan in a message to African nationalist leader Jomo Kenyatta has assured Pakistan’s support for the nationalist freedom movement of Kenya. In his message, the President said Pakistan had advised the Muslims and Pakistanis living in East African countries to do all they can to help the African people in their efforts to achieve freedom.

The message further said Pakistan would extend every possible help for building up Kenya when it achieved freedom, presumably next year. “We in Pakistan are very happy that you and your people are fast moving towards an independent existence. We salute you and your efforts to attain your freedom and also wish you and your people a prosperous and free life,” the President said.

The message has been given to Mr Zafaruddin, a member of the Legislative Council of Kenya colony, who called on the President yesterday to deliver a message from Mr Kenyatta.

The President said, “We are particularly interested in the affairs of Kenya and other East African countries where some of our people have migrated and settled. When changes take place, the minority always feels a bit apprehensive, but our advice has been to them, and will continue to be, that they would do all they can to help the African people attain their right of freedom and at the same time ask for no privileges other than the opportunity to serve their adopted country and promote its interests. They all recognised this and have assured us that this is what they will do.”

P&T becomes T&T RAWALPINDI: The government has decided to bifurcate the existing Posts and Telegraphs Department into two independent and separate Departments to be named as the Post Office Department and the Telephone and Telegraph Department.

Each Department will be under a separate Director-General who will have the same powers and status as the present Director-General of the joint organisation.
