I agree with you. I visited Chicago in 2008 and off course Devon Ave.When I reached Devon Ave. I could at once recognize the street without reading the sign board.... By seeing the litter and trash everywhere. Similarly you can recognize the 74th street in Jackson Heights area in New york. I coluld not find anything special in that street. it's less than an ordinary street in U.S.A.

Devon Ave/Mohammed Ali Jinnah Ave is not just only a food street but it is a major point for Indian and Pakistani's. The independence day parade for both India and Pakistan is held on that street every year where thousand of citiziens from both countries get together and celebrate.
Another important thing on Deveon Ave/Mohammed Ali Jinnah Ave is the MQM Central Office which is the only physical office in the USA that has been in existense for more then two decades. The top leadership worked in that office from time to time. When people visit the street they take pictures of that office.

What to say about Devon Avenue, great place! I wanted to correct the writer, Data Darbar is serving pure Hyderabadi (India Hyderabad) dishes. Most of my friends are Hyderabadis and so I often eat at Hyderabad House. the best Pakistani food is available at Usmania, followed by Khan BBQ. Khan BBQ have the perfect menu for Grill items.

Eating at Delhi Darbar (California and Devon) is wondorful experience, especially Dhaba type desi food at late night after Garba(navratri), or late night Bollywood movie at theaters. The Owner Imraan is really cool guy. We'd moved to Texas since 2007, but lived at Skokie(about 15 min drive from Devon Ave.) for 16 years, good old memories to cherish.

I was there about three months ago visiting from San Francisco on a Sunday afternoon. I saw Hasidic Jewish families walking out of a synagogue. The men and boys were wearing black hats with long hair. The women were dressed very conservatively. As I walked passed them saw a couple of elderly Sikh gentlemen strolling by with their ceremonial Kirpans. There were women in hijab, wearing shalwar qanmiz and saris and also men in the middle eastern garb. Where else in the world you can have this manzar and absolutely wonderful food! Ode to Chicago!

I did visit Devon about six years ago when I went to Chicago for a conference from another U.S. state. It was noon time and the street was almost deserted as most of the shops were close. I noticed two remarkably desi things about Devon. One was the smell of spicy food everyhwhere -- which was fine; but the second thing which I still remember is that there was trash all over the place. I have lived in the U.S. for decades and have almost always seen neat and clean streets everywhere. I wondered why the desis couldn't keep their street clean. The above post refers to "the best, neat and clean rest-rooms." Maybe things have changed since then.
