KARACHI: In a move giving a temporary relief to air travellers, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has deferred for 15 days the recent increase in the charges it recently imposed on air tickets, Dawn has learnt.

Now the increased charges that were to be implemented on Jan 1, 2012 will be implemented on Jan 16.

The increase comprised upward revision of existing taxes as well as introduction of new taxes on local and overseas travel.

A press release issued by the Pakistan International Airlines regarding “CAA airport charges” says that, “CAA Pakistan has deferred the implementation of enhancement of airport charges to Jan 16, 2012 instead of Jan 1, 2012.

“The revised /new charges will not apply on passengers travelling prior to Jan 16, 2012. However, tickets issued now / before Jan 16, 2012 with travel on / after Jan 16, 2012 will be subject to revised /new charges”.

The embarkation fee for overseas travellers of executive and first class was increased from Rs1,000 to Rs2,000 and for economy class from Rs500 to Rs1,000.

The infrastructure development charges of $6, equivalent to Rs540, and security charges of $2, equivalent to Rs180, were introduced.

The total increase in travel fare for first and executive class passengers was Rs1,720 and for economy class passengers Rs1,250.

For domestic travellers the embarkation fee was increased by Rs180 (from Rs120 to Rs300) and the newly introduced airport tax was Rs20.

The total increase was Rs200.
