Ahmad Shuja Pasha

Introduction: Lieutenant-General Ahmad Shuja Pasha is the current Director General of Inter-Services Intelligences (ISI). Pasha has received two extensions and is eligible to serve till 2013.

Army Career Profile: Pasha was commissioned as the Second Lieutenant in the Frontier Force Regiment. He has commandeered a mechanized infantry brigade and has taught as the Chief Instructor of the Command and Staff College. He has also served as a contingent and sector commander of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone.

From the year 2006 to 2008, Pasha served as the Director General of Military Operations at the army headquarters and led/overlooked the military actions and deployments in Swat, Waziristan and Fata.

Post elections of 2008: The newly elected democratic government of PPP strived hard to undertake the control of ISI and place the agency under interior ministry’s power and authority; however the plans failed when General Kayani appointed Pasha as DG-ISI in September 2008.

Pasha has close ties with General Kayani and has the devised strategies to combat Talibans operating in Pakistan. His appointment was welcomed by the government of United States.

Pasha is also a part of the memo scandal which has shaken the political leadership of Pakistan. His reply and testimony will play an integral part in the controversial memo scandal. He is allegedly accused of bypassing the interior and defense ministry whilst drafting and submitting his replies to the Supreme Court by Gilani.
