KARACHI: Pakistan will start manufacturing radio and transistor sets within a year’s time. The biggest Japanese electrical goods manufacturing concern, Tokyo Shibaura Electric Company Ltd., is setting up a radio manufacturing factory in Dacca in association with a local firm.
A senior official of the Japanese firm, who was on a day-long visit, said yesterday that the factory in Dacca, when completed, will produce 22,000 transistors and radio sets annually. At present, he said, about 80 per cent radio parts were imported for radio sets which are assembled here. When the factory gets functional, about 70 per cent of these parts will be manufactured locally.
The work has already begun, and a number of tools and appliances have been shipped to Pakistan for the factory. He was hopeful that the factory would start production before the year is out.
During his stay here, he had talks with officials of West Pakistan, WAPDA, Pakistan Railways and other officials to explore the fields of cooperation between his firm and Pakistan.
He said the Japanese TV mission, which was here earlier to work out the feasibility of setting up a television network in Pakistan, had submitted its report to the government.
To begin with, he said, Pakistan should start small TV station for cities like Karachi, Lahore and Dacca. This could later be expanded into a national network.
Poll mechanism next month
DHADAR: The election machinery will come into existence simultaneously with the announcement next month by President Ayub Khan of the country’s new constitution. This was stated yesterday by the Governor of West Pakistan, Malik Amir Mohammad Khan, while talking to newsmen. He said that the election and delimitation commissions would complete their tasks in the minimum possible time.
