ISLAMABAD, Jan 27: The Election Commission rescheduled on Friday by-elections on 10 seats of the national and provincial assemblies to Feb 25. The date earlier set by the commission was Feb 20.
By-elections will be held on six seats of the National Assembly and four of provincial assemblies in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Two provincial assembly seats on which elections were earlier scheduled for Feb 15 and Feb 6 will also be held on Fen 25.
Most of these seats fell vacant after legislators quit their former parties and joined the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf of Imran Khan.
“The Election Commission of Pakistan, in pursuance of the Supreme Court order issued on Jan 19, 2012, cancelled the schedule of following constituencies and fixed Feb 25, 2012, as
polling day instead of Feb 20, 2012,” said a notification issued by the commission.
The National Assembly constituencies include NA 9 Mardan, NA 140 Kasur, NA 148-149 Multan, NA 168 Vehari and NA 195 Rahim Yar Khan. Provincial constituencies are: PP 18
Attock, PP 44 Mianwali, PS 57 Badin and PS 53 Tandu Muhammad Khan.
The ECP has fixed Feb 25 as poll day in constituency PS-57 Badin-I (old Badin-III) and PP-18 Attock-IV.
Public notice will be issued on Feb 3. Candidates can file nomination papers on Feb 6-7 and scrutiny of papers to be held on Feb 8-9. The last date for disposing of appeals by the tribunal is Feb 14.
Candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on Feb 15 and revised list of candidates will be made public the same day.
According to an ECP official, by-elections will be held on the electoral list which was revised after removing bogus entries from the 2007 list.
