ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court took suo motu notice on Monday of deaths in Lahore of over 100 heart patients because of the reaction to suspected drugs.
The matter will come up for hearing on Tuesday.
The case came to the notice of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on a note initiated by Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani on the death of patients under treatment in the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC).
The chief justice ordered the court office to fix the matter before a three-judge bench comprising Justice Jillani, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Mian Saqib Nisar.
Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq, Advocate General Punjab Khawaja Haris, federal and provincial health secretaries, Punjab police chief and FIA director general were summoned to appear before the court along with replies.
“The issue is indeed grave and has rightly raised public anger and a demand for action,” Justice Jillani said.
He also cited a news report suggesting that the Pakistan Medical Association had given a strike call in protest against the arrest of PIC doctors.
