The President was speaking at the award ceremony of the Adamjee Prize for literature at the Curzon Hall. He also gave away prizes to the four winners of the award. Two cash awards of Rs10,000 each for the best books in Urdu and Bengali literature have been shared by four authors. The ceremony formed part of the third anniversary of the Pakistan Writers Guild which commenced here yesterday.
The President wanted the writers to do real and practical thinking and suggest solutions to the problems of the country. He told the assembly of writers of both the wings of the country that people were emerging out of a society of feudalism and regionalism. The writers should come forward and help people to “move out of their shells”.
The President reminded the writers of their great responsibility in the emerging society, in stimulating people towards building a new corporate life. The writers, the President said, should keep their feet on the ground. They should concentrate on national problems instead of thinking on international matters. There is so much that the writers can do on the human level. Most of the problems of the people are psychological and the writers can do their part in removing them, he concluded.
Suhrawardy aimed at disruption: Ayub
DACCA: President Ayub Khan told newsmen yesterday that the government had definite proof that the activities of former Prime Minister H.S. Suhrawardy, now under detention, were aimed at the disruption of East Pakistan first and then the rest of the country. He was talking to newsmen at the Tejgaon airport. He said he did not think Mr Suhrawardy had much love for Pakistan, although he was a very intelligent man and a good man.
“It was not beyond him to accept monetary assistance from those who are hostile to Pakistan. And there were people to act as his agents with the sole object of disrupting East Pakistan,” he said.
