ISLAMABAD: The government and the opposition on Wednesday failed to reach an agreement over a smooth passage of the 20th Amendment Bill in the Natioanal Assembly, DawnNews reported.
The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML - N) had agreed late on Tuesday to meet again today ahead of the evening’s National Assembly session to reach a consensus over a caretaker set-up for holding the upcoming general elections.
The representatives of the two sides held talks today but failed to end the deadlock and decided to meet again today at 4p.m.
The PML-N was demanding to make it constitutionally binding upon the government to appoint a caretaker set-up with ‘consensus’, instead of ‘consultation’ (as envisaged in the Constitution), with the opposition, for holding the general elections.
PPP leader and federal minister Naveed Qamar has expressed his fears that the situation could get worse if a consensus was not reached over the issue.
