DACCA: After a day of clashes between students and Police, 17 persons were arrested here last night under the East Pakistan Public Safety Ordinance. They include Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Abul Mansur Ahmad, Kafiluddin Chowdhury, Tafazzal Hussain and five Communists, including Ramesh Das Gupta and Saifuddin.

A Press Note said: “From early morning, students started collecting in the Curzon Hall compound and at about 11am came out in a procession. Finding Police pickets outside the gate on Mymensingh Road, they attacked them with brickbats. Tear-gas was used to disperse the procession, which turned towards the Plassey Barracks, being reinforced by a large number of goonda elements.

“On the way, they threw brickbats at the office of daily Azad and several shops, causing serious damage, and manhandled passengers while trying to stop traffic. Then the procession moved on to Nawabpur Road, shouting objectionable slogans and forcing a number of shops to close down.

“The shops, however, re-opened soon after the procession had passed.

“About 1.30pm, the processionists were intercepted between Rathkhola and the junction of Bangshal-Nawabpur Road. At this they pelted stones. In order to control the situation and disperse the crowd, the Police had to use tear-gas and arrest 17 persons.

“Another procession of students from Tejgaon area coming towards Dacca town, shouting various slogans, set fire to a ceremonial gate.

“Near the Eskatan Road, the processionists turned towards the Holy Family Hospital. At about 12 noon they were stopped near the hospital and asked to disperse. But they refused and instead became rowdy.“Thereupon 111 persons were rounded up as a result of which the rest of them dispersed.

“At about 5pm, a crowd of about 200, mostly outside goonda elements, was seen inside the Curzon Hall compound. They threw brickbats at the Police picket in front of the entrance grate of the High Court. But soon after, the crowd melted away.”—Agencies
