KARACHI: A record allocation of over Rs25 crores is likely to be made for education during the next fiscal year. This will mean an increase of nearly 85 per cent over the allocation of Rs14 crores under the same head for the current fiscal year.

The Planning Commission is understood to have forwarded the recommendation for increased allocation to the Economic Committee of the Cabinet.

The allocation of Rs14 crores for the current year is composed of a contribution of Rs5 crores by each of the two provinces and Rs4 crores by the Centre. Even the current year’s allocation was an improvement on Rs10 crores allocation in 1960-61.The proposal for the big increase in the next year’s allocation for the education sector appears to have been necessitated by the speed with which the recommendations of the Education Commission are being implemented.

It also reflects the changing attitude towards education which in the past had not been given the importance that it deserved. A good part of the increased allocation will be spent on building and equipping libraries and laboratories.

East Pakistan was reported to be well within its building schedule, but due to various difficulties, West Pakistan has somewhat lagged behind.
