KARACHI, Feb 10: Five players surged into the men’s singles qualifying round two after registering emphatic victories over their opponents on the opening day of three-day qualifiers in the Open ranking tennis championship at Karachi Club on Friday.

The five who moved ahead were Sumar brothers — Saif and Saad — Faiq Azam, Saad Mubarik and Vinod Das.

Results: Men’s singles: Qualifying round one: Saif Noor Sumar bt Ayaz Khan 6-1, 6-0; Faiq Azam bt Talha Abrar 6-2, 6-1; Saad Mubarik (Lahore) bt Ahmer Ahsan 6-0, 6-0; Saad Noor Sumar bt Salman Butt 6-4, 6-3; Vinod Das bt Salman Manya 6-1, 6-0.

Juniors’ under-17 singles: Qualifying round one: Irtiza Kamran bt Sagar 2-6, 7-6, 10-8.

Saturday’s fixtures: Boys and girls under-15 singles qualifying rounds 9am; boys and girls under-13 singles qualifying rounds 11am; juniors under-17 singles qualifying rounds 1pm; men’s singles qualifying rounds 2pm.—Sports Correspondent
