PESHAWAR, Feb 12: Provincial president of Awami National Party Senator Afrasiab Khattak has said that the poetry and political struggle of Ajmal Khan Khattak provide the guiding principles for Pakhtuns and he would always be remembered for his selfless struggle against military dictators.
Late Khattak’s endless efforts to establish a true democratic and tolerant society are a source of inspiration for the Pakhtuns, said Mr Afrasiab in his speech to participants of a ceremony held to mark the second death anniversary of the former ANP president Ajmal Khattak here on Sunday.
Mr Khattak joined the Bacha Khan Movement at the age of 17 and was an active political and literary voice till his death, said the ANP leader. He said that Mr Khattak faced hardships, but never compromised on principles. The great poet, he said, was widely respected by people in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
He said that his political life was replete with upheavals and he remained in exile for 17 years and returned to Pakistan after the end of martial law. Due to his political struggle, Mr Khattak was elected MNA in 1990.
Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain urged the youngsters to study the teachings of Mr Khattak and take benefit from the vast knowledge he left behind in the shape of several books.
Ajmal Khattak’s eventful life is an open book and a role model for the people. He had also proved that poor people could reach top positions with their ability and capacity, the minister said.
His poetry, Mr Hussain said, was tremendously popular among the Pakhtun population.
