LAHORE, Feb 12: Two persons allegedly stole a diamond necklace worth Rs700,000 from an Indian jewellery stall at Johar Town Expo Centre on Sunday.
The theft took place during the first Indian trade exhibition in Pakistan. It was the second day of the event.
Nawab Town circle ASP Jehanzeb Khan told Dawn that the staff of ND Diamonds alerted the police about the missing of a diamond necklace around 7:30pm. He said the necklace was apparently taken away by two swindlers as one of them, a young woman, fell near the stall and fraudulently behaved as if she was unconscious.
As the stall managers including Kamal Kant focused their attention towards the woman, her accomplice who seemed to be in his 30s got an opportunity to steal the necklace, the ASP said.
He said the suspects skipped from the exhibition before the stall owners realised that their jewel was missing.
The ASP said the expo centre management was responsible for the internal security. He said a case under Sections 379 (punishment for theft) of the Pakistan Penal Code had been registered on the complaint of Kamal Kant.
Meanwhile, a police investigator told Dawn that the CCTV cameras near the stall failed to capture the footages of the suspects and the police would try to trace them on the basis of information provided by the stall operators.
He said CCTV cameras installed at entry-exist points were also being examined.
