Traffic chaos in DHA
Sir, Two main roads in DHA are becoming serious traffic hazards because of the way the flow of traffic is being managed.
Khayaban-i-Shamshir was broadened earlier this year by removing the divider in the middle of the road, presumably to expedite the flow of traffic in the vicinity of the Shamshir Commercial area or Khadda Market. However, without the divider there, drivers started using the lanes on the wrong side of the road, overtaking rashly, as well as making U-turns and frequent turns across the road.
To counter this, white cement movable blocks were placed in the middle of the road. These turned out to be a greater menace. By the end of the day the blocks do not remain in a straight line but are pushed about by people and vehicles. They can be seen scattered all over the road like pieces of Lego. Cars and buses weave in and out of these blocks, using the lane for oncoming traffic as well as making U-turns and turns across the road. This situation is quite dangerous and against all safety norms.
Khayaban-i-Hafiz, which intersects Khayaban-i-Shamshir, is posing another problem in the vicinity. One lane remains blocked to traffic near the Saudi consulate. This has resulted in a constant flow of traffic — including heavy buses and tankers — on 9th Street, which is a narrow street running through a residential area. It has become extremely difficult for the residents of 9th Street to drive in and out of their gates, to walk pets, or just go for a walk down the road, as traffic meant for Khayaban-i-Hafiz is diverted onto it.
It is also a security threat as commercial vehicles with people riding on the roofs have a clear view of the compounds over the walls. There are several other consulates on this street, and I am surprised that their security is not being taken into consideration.
The DHA has a vigilance office in this area but appears to be oblivious to the traffic chaos in this neighbourhood. It is hoped that the authorities will look into the matter and resolve both these issues at the earliest.
A RESIDENT DHA
Mosquito spray Sir, We, the residents of Bantwa Memon Housing Society located in Liaquatabad, are severely affected by mosquitoes. No sprays, coils or mosquito repellents are helping get rid of the insects.
As we all know dengue and malaria are widespread and causing harm on a large scale to the population, we request the authorities concerned to please arrange for fumigation in the area as soon as possible, before it poses a great danger to the lives of residents.

Pedestrian bridge
Sir, The construction of a simple iron plate overhead pedestrian bridge at the PAF bus stop, Sharea Faisal, has been under way for around a year. In the same time period the previous city governments of Niamatullah Khan and Mustafa Kamal had initiated and completed many large, problematic, cumbersome and technical bridges, roads and other projects in difficult areas and surroundings.
A city with a city government and city without a city government — the difference is clear!

Controlling pollution
Sir, It is difficult to understand why we can’t curtail the actions which contribute to the deteriorating and already polluted atmosphere of Karachi.
For the past several weeks, a mixture of crushed material and very fine dust has been put on the potholes on roads in the Nazimabad area. The vehicles passing over it are blowing a huge amount of dust in the atmosphere. This is making the atmosphere tremendously dust-laden and very painful for people with chest complications. The dust, combined with the dry weather of winter, is creating numerous problems.
The authorities concerned are requested to kindly lay bitumen on these patches on top priority to save the people from this self-generated misery.
