PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government would shortly undertake reconstruction of completely destroyed schools and renovation of partially damaged infrastructure in the militancy-hit southern districts of the province, officials said on Thursday.
The reconstruction of 16 schools and dozens of small infrastructure schemes would be carried out with an investment of Rs305 million by the provincial government, an official told Dawn.
“The reconstruction requirements of the militancy-affected southern districts are far more than the activities being initiated in Bannu and its adjoining districts,” said a development planner.
An investment of Rs215 million would be made under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister’s Package to reconstruct 16 schools in place of old buildings, destroyed by terrorists.
Bannu would get 11 schools, Hangu three schools and one school each would be constructed in Lakki Marwat and Kohat districts, according to officials.
The schools’ reconstruction, said the planner, had been tasked to Provincial Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Settlement Authority, expanding the scope of its activities beyond Malakand division’s militancy and flood affected areas.
Initially, only the completely damaged schools were being rebuilt, said a Parrsa official, adding “it is an ongoing process as school buildings partially damaged in militant attacks need repairs in Bannu and other districts.”
Similarly, the provincial government, said the development planner, would provide Rs30 million to each of Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, and Lakki Marwat districts for repairing and renovating infrastructure belonging to health, education, and water supply sectors.
In this respect, the district coordination officers of the three districts had identified a number of schemes in their respective district with the involvement of members of the provincial assembly from the three districts.
The engineering wing of army had been engaged to carry out small infrastructure projects in the three districts, said the official.
