KARACHI, March 8: A worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was shot dead and a prayer leader was wounded in Surjani Town on Thursday.

Police said Abdul Hafeez, a resident of Surjani Sector 50, was standing with friends in the main bazaar in Sector 36-A, Surjani Town, when three men arrived there and an altercation ensued.

The police said that during the heated argument, one of the suspects pulled out his pistol, shot and wounded Hafeez. A passer-by, Abdul Haleem, was also wounded in the firing.

The three suspects escaped following the incident.

The wounded were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Hafeez died.

DSP Javed Abbas said the victim was an activist of the MQM’s Surjani sector and he owned a welding shop.

A police official said Abdul Haleem was the peshimam of Usman Mosque, situated in the same area where the incident took place, and his condition was out of danger.

Later police handed over the body to the family of the victim. No case was registered till late in the night.

Young woman found shot dead

A young woman was found shot dead at a deserted place within the remit of the Gulshan-i-Maymar police station on Thursday.

Police said the unidentified body was found in Taiser Town, near Afghan Camp.

Area SHO Ali Ahmed Bugti said the woman had suffered four bullets wounds to the face. Some spent bullet casings were also found at the scene, suggesting that she had been killed at the spot.

Police said they believed that the body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities, but was later taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi by the police due to the unavailability of a woman medico-legal officer at ASH, the police said.

They said the victim appeared to be an Afghan, aged around 25.

Later the police shifted the body to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Man killed in N. Nazimabad

A man was killed and another was wounded in North Nazimabad within the remit of the Shahrah-i- Noor Jehan police station on Thursday.

Police said the incident took place in Block-I, where gunmen opened fire on motorcyclists Zareen Mateen and Kashif Shakoor. It was not clear if the attackers were mobile, the police said.

Both men were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Zareen died.

The police said the dead victim was a resident of New Karachi and had been nominated in several cases of robbery. He was arrested by the Shahrah-i-Noor Jahan police a few months back on a robbery charge.

No case was registered till late in the night.
