RETAILERS have been willfully selling fresh milk on higher rates of Rs68 and Rs70 for a kilo for a long time in North Karachi sectors such as 7D/4, 7D/3, 7D/2, 7D/1, 14/A and 14/B and its surrounding areas.

They know very well that no authority or institution will confront them on the price they charge consumers. It would be worthwhile to mention here that the rate of fresh milk had already been fixed at Rs60 a kilo by the local government, as well as by the High Court of Sindh on a contempt of court application filed by the City District Government, Karachi.

In the absence of any mechanism to check milk prices and so many other essential commodities at wholesale and retail levels, the stakeholders of the business have been charging prices at will.

People’s representatives seem to be taking no interest in matters concerning the common man.

Even the deputy commissioner and assistant commissioner concerned do not take any proper action. The senior officials in the government should intervene in the matter and ensure that milk is sold at the rate fixed by the government.
