Additionally, a cursory internet source revealed the following:

Note this quotation from that source:
""However, the VA estimates that a veteran dies by suicide every 80 minutes."

That quotation is footnoted with this attribution:
"Department of Veterans Affairs, Fact Sheet: VHA Suicide Prevention Program,
Facts About Veteran Suicide (March 2010)."

Surely you are not referring to an official VHA Fact Sheet as "unsubstantiated"?

The Western media is a servant of the elites, who direct US foreign policy. Reporting on the troops reveals a form of exploitation that American politicians do not want to address. The need for a new 'draft' would emerge as a practical solution, especially with high unemployment. But drafted citizens would question the reasons for war and limit the options of the MIC to use war to generate income for select defense oriented corporations. The lack of combat troops allows the use of mercenaries, like Raymond Davis to carry out combat operations without placing demands on the citizenry-while simultaneously paying billions to corporations who hire ex commando types. Like the Blackwater killers in Nissour-who did not technically represent the US, but was hired to facilitate the same mission. Then there is the question of funding sources to pay for treatment, therapy and rehabilitative services-all very expensive. After the Vietnam War most of the jails in the US were occuppied by veterans. Most of the homeless, unemployed underclass is populated by veterans of a war over 40 years old. Much like the shortfall to pay for promised pensions, no one wants to pay now. America shrugs it shoulders and dismisses all the innocent victims of its income generating wars. Racist American people continue to believe that not all human life is equal or valuable. Kidnap an American child and the culture is shocked and outraged. Kill hundreds of Gazan children and the culture is uninterested. It may be karma that these damaged souls will return home to terrorize their fellow citizens for the forseeable future, and at great expense.
